Geochronology of various granitic lithologies in the Hoggar, N Africa

with Jean-Paul Liegeois, Navez, J., Black, R. and others

U-Pb SHRIMP geochronology of granitoids of the Hoggar in north Africa, will provide firm time constraints on the tectonothermal evolution of this terrane.

Large mega-shearzones dissect the Hoggar, and allow the recognition of various terranes, ranging from Palaeoproterozoic basement to Neoproterozoic juvenile arcs. Because of the dominance of whole rock Rb-Sr age determinations in the past, which have to varying degrees been isotopically disturbed during the various granulite facies metamorphic events, the tectonic makeup and character of the Tuareg Shield has remained enigmatic. This new U-Pb SHRIMP geochronological work will provide some robust age data, based on which new and improved models on the formation of the Hoggar can be formulated.
